Bicycle Suspension, Protecting Our Bike

Bicycle is a machine, exactly a transportation machine. And as a machine it contains a set of parts and components each with their own unique function. It can be categorized in three major sections. The main part is the Frame, which holds all the bike’s components and parts. It is the main part of the bike itself where every other component attached. The Frame consists of top tube, down tube, seat tube, seat stay, and chain stay. The other important part is the front set, which consists of handle bar grip, head tube, shock absorber, front brakes and fork. The other parts are the wheels, pedal and crank arm, chains, derailleur and many other small bike components.
But in this articles we will be only discussing about the bicycle suspension. First we go to the term itself. According to Wikipedia: “Bicycle suspension refers to the system or systems used to suspend the rider and all or part of the bicycle in order to protect them from the roughness of the terrain over which they travel.” Bicycle Suspension is primarily used on mountain bikes to protect its riders from the shock of hard terrain. But Bicycle Suspension is also common used in hybrid bicycles; sometimes some road bikes use it too.
Bicycle suspension can be implemented in many ways. They can be placed as Suspension front fork, Suspension stem, suspension seatpost, rear suspension, and suspension hub. For rear suspension, they are available in many types. There are soft tail, single pivot, unified rear triangle, four bar suspension and the Horst link, FSR system, VPP, DW-link, Split Pivot, Monolink, and Equilink. Bicycle with both front and rear Bicycle Suspension System is called the full suspension bikes. In addition Bicycle Suspension can also be used in the seat or saddle even in the hub. Besides provide comfort ride, Bicycle Suspension can also improve the safety and efficiency to keep one or both wheels in contact with the ground and allow the rider’s body mass to move over the ground in flatter trajectory.
As stated before there various Bicycle Suspension. But to call the most common Bicycle Suspension there are: Front Suspension, which is often implemented with shock absorber in the front fork. This is the most common Bicycle Suspension available. Then there are also Rear Suspension, Soft Tail, Single Pivot, and many more as stated above. This article will not explore all the Bicycle Suspension types available, since there are many similar articles about Bicycle Suspension available on the net today. Anyway, we can also surf the internet whenever we want to buy this important bike’s part.
