Huffy Bikes, One of The Most Popular
By : Maxeka Lumuda
Huffy Bikes is an American importer and manufacturer of mass-market bicycle yet inexpensive bicycles. It started in 1887 when the founder George P. Huffman purchased the Davis Sewing Machine Company then moved its factory to Dayton, Ohio. In 1894, seven years later, Huffman adapt this sewing machine factory to manufacture bicycles. Until 1949, Huffy Bikes manufactured and sold bicycles under the name “Dayton” brand. Among its popular models are the Special Roadster, the Racer, the LaFrance, and the Streamliner. Also in this year, Huffy Bikes manufactured the Huffy Convertible, which is a children’s bicycle with rear training wheels and footsteps. This model was then revolutionized the children’s market and it was the first Huffy bikes under the Huffy brand. In the 1953, the Huffy Bikes logo was created and Huffy switched all its bicycles and parts to the Huffy Bikes name. Some of the popular models of the Huffy Bikes name era include the Dragster, the Scout, the Sigma and the Radio Bicycle, which had a radio in its frame, for the people enjoying road biking.
Then comes the new era where on the 1970, the Huffy Corporation was founded as the umbrella company to house the Huffy Bicycle division. This also to house the Huffy’s emerging sporting goods line. This was paid well when in 1984 and 1989 summer Olympic the US athlete riding Serotta-built bicycle who were racing under the Huffy Bikes name has won two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Huffy Bikes had a manufacturing and assembly facility in Celina, Ohio and becomes the Celina’s largest employer.
A major blow received in 1996 by the bicycle division when the U.S. courts stated that surging imports of low-cost, mass-market bicycles from China did not pose a ‘material threat’ to the last three major U.S. bicycle manufacturers . In addition, they are: Murray, Inc., Roadmaster, and Huffy Bikes! After analyzing that, it became apparent that to continue in U.S. production of low-cost and mass-market bicycles was no longer viable, Huffy Bikes soon closed down all remaining U.S. bicycle-manufacturing operations in 1999. This at was then followed by Murray and Roadmaster.
The Huffy Bikes production lines consist of high quality bikes in any types and use. Some to mention are: little kids, boys with bikes, scooters, tricycles and extreme ride. While for girls, there are special bikes and scooters as well. There are also men and women Huffy Bikes each consist of BMX/freestyles, mountain bikes and scooters.
