As a recreational sport, mountain biking enjoys its increasing popularity during the 1990s.  A small group of offroad riders firstly developed the rugged old bicycles into mountain bikes so they could rode them onto the steep, rocky hillsides of the Marin County, California, in the mid 1970s. The new trend spread rapidly and the first mass-production of specialized moutain bike was started in 1981 in the United States.

Some people call it an all terrain bike, or ATB. Some people prefer to use the term specialized mountain bike to refer to the same item. A mountain bike’s frames are tougher than regular ones because it has high ground clearance and wide tires with some knobby tread. The handlebars are wide and flat. The brake is more powerful with cantilever or disc brake style. The gears are made in a wide range from 21 to 27.

Some people use a specialized mountain bike for touring and some other use it for daily use. The bike’s robustness and maneuverability give more value for any rider. Later on, the bike is also developed for competitive race. The United States is the first to hold a mountain bike championship in 1983. The world championship for downhill and cross-country races were also firsly held in the United States in 1990 and since then it has been held annually. Olympic game in Atlanta 1996 was the first to officially include the sport to international scene by opening the cross-country races for men and women.

Moutain bikes are manufactured by numerous brands. Each brand of specialized mountain bike differs in its unique features. Those brands give you the same high quality performance to give you a different riding experince compared to riding the ordinary bikes. These features include ease of riding, firm frames, cool design, high speed, light weight, and other important aspects of a good mountain bike.
