Tandem Tricycle, an overview

Tandem bikes are also available as tricycles; the conventional tandem trike has a small but devoted following in the United Kingdom, and is available in one-wheel and two-wheel drive models. Tandem tricycle has three wheels and it is configured for 2 people. Its wheel configuration includes a single front wheel and a pair of wheels in the back.
Recumbent tandem tricycle is also gaining popularity throughout the world.

A tandem tricycle is easily built from standard bikes by removing the front wheel and fork of the rear bicycle, placing an adapter on the frame of the rear bike, and mounting the adapter to the rear of the leading bike. The adapter allows the rear bike to tilt, to articulate, and to bend with respect to the leading bike. Each function is independently achieved through suitable assemblies, and the combination lets simultaneous tilting, articulating, and bending. Although described with reference to an adapter suitable for converting standard bikes to a tandem tricycle, the invention also contemplates the manufacture of an integral bicycle-built-for-two or tandem tricycle having an adapter which lets tilting, articulating, and bending of the trailing section of the tandem bikes relative to the leading section. Multisectioned velocipedes are also contemplated.

Just like a bike built for two with one rider behind the other, but in a tricycle form, the tandem tricycle is fun and durable. The tandem tricycle makes tandem fun available to everybody! Without any need to balance, and a wide, stable ride, the tandem tricycle provides the joy of riding a tandem bikes with the safety and stability of a one-seater tricycle. It’s good for all couples!

Rather than fun and recreation, a lot of people find tandem tricycle to be useful for therapeutic uses, allowing rear riders with special needs to enjoy the fun and benefit of cycling. One of a well-known institute provides a tandem tricycle activity to persons with cognitive and physical impairments. Using our two-man tandem tricycle, a volunteer accompanies participants during rides along the paved trail at a recreation area. The participants are provided to be supervised rides year round.
